Spotlight: The Lip Bar

When it comes to lipstick, I usually have to mix a few colors with a lip pencil to get the right shade. I often get frustrated when I can’t get the right hue, but then I say to myself, slow down. You can either leave the house looking crazy or put together, so I always choose the latter.

One color in particular that I have trouble with is red. I know people have been saying for years that MAC’s Ruby Woo is a staple for black women, but on me, straight out the tube, it doesn’t work. I always have to tone it down a bit with their Chestnut lip pencil (now, I have to confess, this is definitely a staple….).

But, since I stumbled across the company, The Lip Bar, I don’t have to do this anymore.

Their shade, Bawse Lady, is the perrrfect deep red! I mean perfect! It’s matte and you don’t have to reapply that much after eating. It’s definitely a good product to invest in because it’s vegan, provides good coverage and it’s affordable.

Sooo do they only carry matte lipstick?

No. They also sell lip gloss and regular lipstick that are moisturizing, like a satin finish.

And how’s the color range?

Great! They have everything from red to pink to purple and even blue.

I always have difficulty finding the right nude. What do you recommend?

Funny you ask because in addition to what they sell, they came out with four nude shades earlier this year. Cougar, Ms. Independent, Heartbreaker and Know It All. I have Ms. Independent and it’s one of my favs. I pair it with a brown lip liner and BAM! I have the perfect nude.

Where can I purchase it?

On their website or at Target (online and at select stores).

So which ones do you have?

They were at the Essence Street Style event and the woman behind the counter had Bawse Lady on her lips with Boy Trouble in the center. It was the most gorgeous combination, so of course, I bought Boy Trouble (I purchased Bawse Lady awhile ago), but I own six: Bawse Lady, Rebel, Boy Trouble, Control Freak, Ms. Independent and First Lady. AND recently they had a 40% off sale on old packaging so I bought Crown Me, Cougar, Unimpressed and Know it All.

From top to bottom: Bawse Lady, Unimpressed, Boy Trouble, Know It All, Crown Me, Rebel, First Lady, Control Freak and Ms. Independent (Cougar not shown)

Overall, will you buy more of their products?

Yes and yes! It doesn’t feather or transfer, which is a plus for me, but most importantly, it’s vegan and cruelty-free.
